We've each been to Australia, but not together (yet). Sydney is highly recommended, particularly the Sydney Harbour area, inclding the iconic Sydney Opera House. The Opera House offers tours - it's a chance to see the innards of the buidling and its architecture without sitting though an opera.
Nearby is the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It is picturesque, but the bonus is that you may have the opportunity to climb on it. Bridgeclimb Sydney (http://www.bridgeclimb.com/) offers three-and-a-half hour guided tours which reach the top of the bridge. The view is great and it's a fun experince. Although you are always attached to the structure of the bridge, the climb is not for anyone who is even remotely afraid of heights. Expensive, but worth it. Make sure you reserve your climb far ahead of time - it's a very popular activity.

Normally, we are not fans of visiting zoos on trips when there are so many other things to do, unless there's a compelling reason to do so. There is in this case. Across the Harbour is the Taronga Zoo. You travel there by ferry, which gives you a good chance to see the Harbour from the water (eliminating the need for a separate tour to do so). Australia has an amazing variety of indigenous animals, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth (don't know about other planets). The zoo has many species which you won't see in the wild or in
other zoos, and you can get up nice and close (anyone want to pet a kaola? A wallaby?).
After your sightseeing find on outdoor restaurant at the harbour and watch the people and boats go by, or maybe see fireworks over the Opera House.
